Dyneema® grades for engineered heavy lifting

Dyneema® SK78 fiber

Recommended grade for lifting slings with superior durability through highest fatigue, creep and abrasion resistance of all UHMWPE fibers. This grade also offers best performance at elevated temperatures.

Dyneema® DM20 fiber

For lifting arrangements that are loaded semi-permanently or at elevated temperatures for a longer period

Bio-based

Both Dyneema® SK78 and DM20 fiber are available as bio-based options. Bio-based Dyneema® fiber offers the exact same performance characteristics as conventional Dyneema® with the added benefit of CO2 savings.

Design for sustainability

Not only is Dyneema® the world’s strongest fiber™, but it also has the lowest carbon footprint per unit strength of any high-performance fiber. Better yet, it’s now available in bio-based form (in fact, it’s the world’s first ever bio-based HMPE fiber).

Bio-based Dyneema® has a carbon footprint 90% lower than generic HMPE – and you can still count on the exact same quality and properties as with conventional Dyneema®.

Predict service lifetimes with Fatigue Performance Modeling

Did you know Dyneema® is the only fiber manufacturer to test at both fiber and sling level? It’s because we’re dedicated to helping designers identify the perfect solution for their engineered heavy lifting challenges. So dedicated, in fact, that we’ve built our own proprietary state-of-the-art tests and models – like our Fatigue Performance Modeling tool.

Because when it comes to high-stakes lifting operations, testing a fiber’s initial breaking strength isn’t enough. Designers need to be able to accurately predict a lifting sling’s performance over time and as a function of usage – so they can minimize risks and maximize efficiencies.

Explore our suite of testing tools

Initial break strength is one thing. How strength evolves over time as a function of use is another. But there’s even more to consider when designing engineered heavy lifting solutions – and when you’re choosing the right fiber to realize optimum performance in challenging conditions. With Dyneema®, you can rest assured that our proprietary, state-of-the-art models and tests have been carefully designed to simulate real-world conditions and performance. In fact, we’re the only fiber manufacturer to test at both fiber and sling level. Our uniquely comprehensive methods mean we can calculate the exact Dyneema® fiber grades you need for yourheavy lifting or rigging system – all according to its operations, environment, and lifetime requirements.

Tension Fatigue Test

Dyneema® has built fatigue testing equipment to monitor the fatigue lifetime at both fiber level and sling or rope level. At the rope level, we use an oven to accelerate tension fatigue and carry out our experiments in an efficient way.

And there’s more. By coupling these data with our DNV-certified fatigue performance model, we can help you assess the longevity of your slings and give you the confidence to set performance-driven retirement criteria.

Abrasion Test

Because of their contact with metal surfaces under high pressure, slings inevitably face external abrasion. For decades, fiber-level testing of abrasion performance – such as yarn-on-yarn testing or hex-bar testing – has yielded comparative results for fibers. But these tests can’t be scaled up to assess larger diameter ropes or slings, making them a far-from-accurate insight into the types and impacts of abrasion faced by slings operators.

Enter Dyneema®’s state-of-the-art abrasion tester. Designed and built to simulate real-world abrasion, this equipment runs slings or ropes over interchangeable testing surfaces that let us mimic your specific conditions. Experiments can be run dry or wet, with a variety of line tensions and frequencies, and there’s even the option to monitor the process using inspection cameras and thermal sensors.

Rope Temperature Model

From ambient temperature to hot surfaces to internal friction, there are different factors that can affect a sling’s operating temperature – and consequently its durability, reliability, and safety. Designing a system that performs in all kinds of climates and weather systems (especially those with extremely low or high temperatures) can therefore be a major challenge for designers. With our core temperature modeling tools, Dyneema® can help you accurately predict how fibers and slings will behave in environmental conditions ranging from the Middle East to the Arctic.
